I started fishing when I was 7 years old. My Grandfather Sam had a boat and He, my Father, and I used to go out periodically. Fluke fishing off the Jersey coast, heaven! The only problem, I get sea sick every time I go out. It didn't matter, I would fish no matter what. Funny story, one time I really got very sick. I went below deck to lay down. I was probably 8 at the time. My father was a practical joker, came down and asked me if I wanted lunch, he put a salami under my nose. According to legend, I turned green and headed back over the side to do my business. Cross my heart it really happened to me. This fluke I caught in Connecticut off the Sound. Pool winner. (btw I always travel with Dramamine now). |

My Pool winning Tuna! |

I am superstitious, I have a Yankee Cap that has been with me for almost 30 years now. I take it out every time I go fishing. Sometimes I wear it the right way. I also have this lime green shirt that at the time was my lucky fishing shirt, although, I have since changed that. This was a very interesting fishing trip. I believe it was 2010, off the Jersey coast again. I found that I needed a change so I graduated to Tuna. These trips are the bomb, 24 hours. Eight hours out, eight hours fishing, and eight hours back. On this particular trip, the captain went out even though there was ocean chop. Needless to say a number of passengers got sick. By now I am on my forth Dramamine and they weren't working. One thing I found out is you never stay in the cabin when you are sick. So I stayed outside the whole way out. I got sick. The captain parked us, and said start fishing, even though I am sick I am fishing. I was really bad by now. My legs were wobbling but it didn't matter. When this fish hit, it almost took me over the side. The mate knew I was sick and he asked if he could reel it in. Heck no!! I told him to stand me up by the rail and hold me up. I brought it into the boat. This baby netted me $350.00 in pool winnings. That is enough to cure the sickness. I just felt sorry for the 3 poor individuals that stayed in the cabin the entire trip. They never put a line in the water. |
I am probably going to catch more than fish by posting this picture, although, the story is funny enough, so, I am happy I captured it with a picture. This is my son Garrett, he used to go fishing with me, provided I bait the hook. This picture was taken around 2009. On this particular trip we were fishing the Sound again. It started raining, then it started raining harder. Eventually the lightening and thunder started. I am not paying attention, fishing trying to catch something in spite of the swells. I look to my left, then to my right, and notice I am the only one fishing. Everyone else had the sense to move to the cabin. The captain finally came out to me and said, "you are the most determined fisherman I ever met. Reel in your line we are going back home!" I took this picture during the storm, it is dear to my heart. |
